Obituary for Candace E. Sloma

Candace “Candy” E. Sloma, recently of Augusta, but now of heaven, was born in 1929 in Buffalo, NY. She passed into eternity on May 10, 2022.

Raised in the Orchard Park area (go Buffalo Bills), she lived her early days during the Great Depression which left an indelible impression on her. Her coupon cutting was second to none. Even if she never went to that store, the coupon called her. Her specialty was chocolate chip and molasses cookies, roasted tuna and cheese sandwiches, tuna casserole, cranberry salad or lasagna. Upon her marriage (for 66 years) to Bob, of Eden, NY, they moved to California for Air Force service. They moved cross country (with young Cindy in tow), back to Orchard Park, where Candace was a homemaker who occasionally worked outside the home. Bobby Jr was born and they moved to East Aurora. Camping in Letchworth State Park and Acadia National Park were highlights. In 1969 they moved to Detroit, Maine, to live on a farm. Twelve hour trips back to Buffalo to visit family, as well as caring for a garden, cows, Wilbur the goat, Bridget the sheep, rabbits, pigs, cats (Calico, Woody, Dilly, Mazie) and dogs (Tilly, Sydney, Twiggy, Maxwell) (no normal names here) and occasional fishing in Plymouth and Newport filled the time. Moving to Windham, then to Augusta, kept them busy. Medical difficulties came with age, but she always made her house a home. Wallpaper, paint, and decorations, some new, some family heirlooms, filled the home. She recognized her sinfulness and asked Jesus to come into her heart, He became her Savior and she now resides where there is no death, no mourning, no crying or pain.

Survivors include her husband Bob of Augusta; daughter, Cindy and special friend Karen of Augusta, son, Bob and wife Donna of St. Albans; grandchildren Bob III and Katie Sloma of West Paris, Jonathan and Karolyne Sloma of Wilton, Tim and Erin Sloma of Auburn, Katie and Hunter Bachelder of Farmington; and seven precious great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Penney Memorial Baptist Church in Augusta, on May 21st at 1PM. Burial will be at Maine Veterans Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta on May 25th at 9AM.
