SCARBOROUGH-Betsynell H. Esancy, 88, of South China, passed away June 21, 2021 at Pine Point Center in Scarborough following a fall at her home. She was born May 1, 1933, a daughter of Jasper and Elizabeth (McKillop) Haynes.
Betsy grew up at Buckhorn camps on Middle Jo Mary Lake. She went to school in Millinocket and graduated from Stearns High School in the class of 1952. She went on to earn her Associate’s degree from Husson University and worked for several years at the East Millinocket Center for Handicapped as a bookkeeper. Married to an Air Force Sergeant, she lived in Texas, Maine, England and New Jersey before settling in Millinocket. By this time, the family included Michael, Katharine, Steven, and Robert.
Betsy later met and married Ralph Esancy and together they made their home in South China. Betsy was employed as a teacher’s aide for many years at the Palermo School. She enjoyed creating beautiful quilts for the babies of her family and was a member of the Pine Tree Quilters Guild. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Augusta Nature Club, Senior College Group, and was a faithful member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir. In addition, she enjoyed volunteering at the South China Library. Betsy assisted in organizing her class high school reunions and was the treasurer for the Williams’ annual family reunion in Great Pond. Some of her favorite past times are spending time with family, baking goodies for her friends and neighbors, and traveling, especially trips taken to Scotland and Igaluit in Baffin Island. She knew the location of many ice cream shops and never passed one without stopping.
She was predeceased by her son, Michael Butler; her husband, Ralph Esancy; and her grandson, Joshua Butler.
She is survived by her children, Kathy Jensen and her husband Rick, Steven Butler, and Robert Butler; daughter in law, Hue Butler; grandchildren, Nichole Beard, Chris Butler, Paul Butler, Michael Butler, Tracy Butler, Magen Leikam, Matthew McCarthy, Madison Robinson, Dylan Butler, Jasen Jensen, Keisha McDaniel, and Leticia Dunbar; 15 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; siblings, Lucy Carey and her husband Hank, and Jasper “Sandy” Haynes; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on July 5th at 11am at the Emmanuel Lutheran Episcopal Church, 209 Eastern Ave., Augusta, ME 04330. Burial will take place at a later time at the Millinocket Cemetery.
