Obituary

SIDNEY, MAINE
Curtis A. “Skip” Smith, Jr. - age 67, of Pond Road, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 13, 2021 with his wife and children by his side. He was born on July 24, 1953 in Augusta, Maine to Curtis A. Smith, Sr. and Betty (Freeman) Smith.
Skip attended school in Sidney and graduated from Messalonskee High School in 1972. In August 1974, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Mary, and soon began a family of their own.
He worked at Frank Pomerleau, Inc in appliance repair during the early years of his marriage but it was his desire for auto body repair that resulted in a career change. In the late 1980’s, he then became the owner and operator of West Sidney Auto Body, doing what he loved the most. In 2010, he also decided to follow in his late father’s footsteps and take on a side job driving school bus for RSU 18 where he was able to bring joy, laughter, and lifelong memories to the kids he drove to and from school.
Skip was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend and a firm believer in God. For most of his Christian life he worshiped at West Sidney Baptist Church but in recent years has been in faithful attendance with his family at Church Hill Baptist Church in Augusta.
He and his family spent a lifetime of weekends and vacations at the camp on Moxie where he loved to fish, dune buggy, ATV ride, and snowmobile. He also raced snowmobiles during the oval ice track days from the 70’s to the mid 90’s when he then decided it was time to hang up the race helmet, but never gave up his passion for snowmobiling for fun with his family by his side. He also loved to build and fly R/C planes where he would always draw an audience.
Skip was predeceased by his father, his uncle Henry N. Smith and aunt Mary L. Smith, all of Sidney.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary A. (Michaud) Smith of Sidney, ME; their four children and seven grandchildren; Laurie Elsemore and her husband Kerry of Windsor, ME, their children Cody and his wife Grace and Jacob; Carrie Smith of Waterville, ME, her children Simon and Ava; Jamie Higgins and her husband Kevin of Sidney, and their children Jasmine and Shawn; Jeremy Smith and his wife Jaimie of Vassalboro, ME and their son Isaiah. Also surviving is his mother, Betty, of Sidney, ME; seven siblings, Linda Smith, Carol Smith, Barbara Tobey, Donald Smith and his wife Doreen, Ronald Smith and his wife Julie, Andrew Smith and his wife Lisa, Dixon Smith and his wife Laurie; sister-in-law Brenda Cadwallader and her husband Mike of West Gardiner, ME; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to MaineGeneral Medical Center and the team of doctors and nurses for the compassionate care that was given towards Curtis during his recent illness in the last month of his life.
Family and friends may visit from 6-8 PM on Thursday June 24, 2021 at Church Hill Baptist Church, 258 Church Hill Road, Augusta, ME where a funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday June 25, 2021.
Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade, ME.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME. Condolences, stories and photos may be shared at www.plummerfh.com . Anyone wishing to send flower arrangements should send them to the church, no earlier than Thursday, June 24th.

My condolences to all the Smith family on the loss of your Skip. It saddens me when another of the "Sidney Kids" has left us too soon. My family and your family went to school throughout the grades together. I remember Skip, even though he was younger than Linda and I. Sisters always tell the truth about their brothers, so I feel I know him a little. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Diana Parks

Mary and family
It I is with sadness that I heard of Curtis passing.
I have the privilege of working with Curt for the past 12 plus years driving bus for RSU-18
Each and every day at MMS I would board his bus and shoot the breeze prior to our departing for PM runs.
It is this time I got to know Curt and truly enjoy his friendship.
Always quick with a wise crack and give advice to those around.
The world has lost a gentle soul.
May the lord guide you thru this most difficult of times.
Mary, please know that you and your family are in my thought and prayers

This is a very sad day. Skip loved to go to camp in moxie and ride the dune buggy all day. (I think he always came back the most dusty) Skip truly was in love with Mary. He was a devoted father and was proud of each one of his children and grandchildren. He touched everyone’s heart each time he chatted with them. He will be sadly missed. Lynn Kensell (Moody)
