Obituary

AUGUSTA, MAINE
Lucien J. “Lou” Bernier peacefully went to be with the Lord, after a long illness on Saturday, June 5, 2021. He was born in Eagle Lake, Maine on May 17, 1949. He is one of the youngest of thirteen children born to the late Solomon and Agnes (Saucier) Bernier. He had a college degree in Business Management from Ricker College. Lou proudly served in the United States Army and was a Vietnam Veteran. He is a lifetime member of the VFW.
At the age of 17, Lou was employed by Potato Service in Presque Isle, as a forklift driver in the Freezer Department before serving in the military. After his service in the military, he returned to Potato Service as an Assistant Manager, and a short time later promoted to Manager of the Warehouse and Shipping Department for 18 years. The family moved to the Augusta area in 1986 where he was employed by Crowe Rope for 11 years before early retirement due to his health.
Lucien was predeceased by his parents, three brothers, Gilman, Edmond and Camille, three sisters, Marie Clair, Madeline Bernier and Eveline Paradis. Surviving, one brother Joseph Bernier and wife Kerry, six sisters Maxine and husband Bernard Bernier; Kathleen White; Nancy and husband Dale Drake; Patricia and husband Scott Bagley; Theresa and husband Wayne Lulek; Jean M Bernier.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandra “Sandy” (Vaillancourt) Bernier and their four daughters and ten grandchildren; Pamela and husband James Downs, daughter Kaileigh; Peggy Bernier and three sons Cameron, Brandon and Troy Dodd; Penny Bernier and daughter Kimberleigh; Patricia and husband Corey Vachon and their four sons; Garrett, Adrian, Raidan and Gannon and two daughters Callie and Charley; and many nieces and nephews.
Lou had a huge heart, not just with family and friends but with everyone he met. A generous heart to all. He had a very devote love of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and many saints who he called on for help. He was a quiet soul to all who knew him. A wonderful father and husband. He loved to cook. He was an excellent cook, and everyone loved his meals. He was a Eucharistic Minister for many years and was a great help to the Worship and Spirituality committee decorating the church for Christmas and Easter. He loved serving and offered himself to clean the church after large services. He looked forward to cooking for family gatherings and cooking for the Charismatic group every year until he turned ill and was unable to anymore. His greatest joy was restoring religious statues, no matter the size, nor how far he had to travel. With every piece he worked on, he would pray to that saint asking to guide his hands. Many of them required great patience. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He preferred to have them around as often as possible. They brought him so much joy. He was a great Papa and he will be missed greatly.
Family and friends may visit from 2-4 & 6-8 PM on Tuesday, June 15th at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Wednesday June 16th at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta, ME. Burial, with military honors, will be at 1:00 PM in section G at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta, ME.
Memorial donations may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America, P.O. Box 758589, Topeka, KS 66675-8589.
