I will forever be grateful to Rita for rescuing my 7th grade home economics project thirty some-odd years ago. For a project, I had chosen to make a blue and white checkered soccer ball plush toy. After spending several grueling hours behind a sewing machine, I ended up with what more or less resembled an overstuffed blueberry pancake with fishing wires running through it. And, of course, the project was due the next day. Carrying the dilapidated project in my hand, as well as the wounded pride in my throat, I went to see Rita. With the compassion of a grandmother, and with the urgency and skill of an ER doctor, Rita went to work transforming the mess I had made into a picture-perfect toy soccer ball. To this day, whenever I see that soccer ball, it always brings a smile to my face remembering what Rita did for me.

God bless you, Rita. You will be missed!

Rita was loved by our family. My Dad, Richard Bumford, loving would tease her and call her Big “Reet” and she would shake her fist or stick out her tough at him. My Mom, Lorraine Bumford, looked up to her older sister and would go back to Maine in the summer to visit and reminisce about the “Farm” and “Camp” after both of their spouses had past. As a cousin, Rita would always give me a big hug and make me feel welcome every time I came to visit and that meant a lot to me.
I’m saddened by her passing, but Rita will always be in my heart.
Loving regards,
Dennis and Daisy Bumford.
