Stephen J. McElvaine - age 62, met his Savior the afternoon of August 24, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born in New Brunswick, NJ on December 8, 1957, the eldest son of the late Frances and Robert McElvaine.
Steve was deeply loved by his wife of 39 years, his children, grandchildren, nieces and other family members.
Steve was known for his kindness, caring, quick wit, gentleness, compassion, faith in God, and profound love. He had a song lyric for any occasion, an encyclopedic knowledge of every cartoon theme song, and a vast store of trivia facts, especially when sports was the topic. He was a lifetime fan of the often disappointing NY Jets, thanks to their winning Super Bowl III with Joe Namath at the helm.
He was a Deacon and member of the church Council at Hope Baptist Church in Hightstown, NJ from a very young age, an Elder of United Baptist Church of Oakland, Maine for many years and a member of Faith Church in Waterville, Maine upon his death.
Steve is survived by his wife, JoAnn of Rome, ME; son, Patrick and Vara and their daughter, Catriona of Augusta, ME; son, Greg and Brittney and their daughter, Lucy of Brewer, ME; brother, Bryan and Ranae of Tumersville, NJ; brother, Kevin and Trudie of Lincolnton, NC; sister, Marie Ondy and husband, Marc of Robbinsville, NJ; and sister, Colleen McElvaine of NJ.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to: His Hands Support Ministries, His Hands For Haiti, P O Box 72, Peru, ME 04290.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME.

Steve & I were friends for most of our lives. We met in Miss VanHise’s second grade class & except for a brief time when Steve attended a Christian school, went all the way through our senior year of high school together. Steve was one of the smartest people I know & that often made for some friendly competition between us as students. Steve was also HILARIOUS & could ALWAYS be counted on for laughs & his great sense of humor! Steve’s family & mine also began attending the same church when he & I were both 13yrs old, our families becoming good friends & Steve’s dad serving as our youth group leader. Early in our teens, Steve & I were “boyfriend & girlfriend” for about a month & I am SO thankful we returned to our previous solid friendship once our brief dating life was over. I was also happy when JoAnn Dernorsek entered the scene in high school & at church - God had the perfect mate chosen for Steve & I rejoice that the 2 of them shared such a wonderful, beautiful, deep love for so many years. I thank God with all my heart that Steve & Jo will be reunited one sweet day. But for now, Steve is whole again, is not suffering, & is with Jesus: his FAITH is SIGHT! I look forward to seeing you again, my friend, & laughing together in eternity.
