Obituary for Nathan M. "Nate" Mitchell

Norridgewock, Maine
Nate M. Mitchell - dedicated educator and celebrated outdoorsman, Nate Mitchell, exited this world on October 23, 2018. He was born on Nov. 17, 1930 in Milbridge, Maine the son of Raymond and Nettie Mitchell. At age 12, Nate moved to Boothbay Harbor where he graduated from High School in 1949. He went on to receive a BS degree in Education at the University of Maine at Farmington and then he earned his Master’s Degree in Education Administration at the University of Maine at Orono .
He began his career as an educator in the Augusta School System in 1954. After a two year interruption to serve in the army during the Korean War he resumed his teaching career in Augusta and continued until 1980 when he retired as principal of the Lou Buker Jr. High School. After living over 60 years in both Augusta and Gardiner Nate moved to Norridgewock to live with his son Scott and family. The final eight months of his incredible life were spent in the loving care of the extraordinary nurses and staff in the comfort and care wing at Glenridge Nursing Home in Augusta.
Nate was an avid skier (and ski instructor) on both snow and water, tennis player, Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics fan, but his greatest passions were hunting and fishing in his beloved state of Maine. Through his TV show Outdoors in Maine, the many outdoor articles he wrote for the Brunswick Times and his job with The Maine Sportsman Magazine he became a popular and well-known ambassador for the Pine Tree State. Nate would happily talk with anyone about hunting and fishing and his expertise and opinions were highly sought after and respected. In his later years he served as narrator/naturalist on puffin and whale watch trips out of Boothbay Harbor.
Other highlights of Nate’s life include serving as president of the Augusta East Little League in 1971 and being a long time member and former president of the Augusta Kiwanis Club. Most recently he helped assist the Boston Red Sox in winning the 2018 World Series….well we are quite sure he assisted in some capacity.
Nate was predeceased by his parents, sister Audrey Purinton and his cherished wife Linda. He is missed and survived by his son Scott who resides in Norridgewock with his wife Deidre, children Meredith and George along with Nate’s good friend Bella , and his son Jeff who resides in Golden, Colorado with his wife Laurel and children Audrey and Jack.
A celebration of Nate’s life will be held on Saturday, November 17th at White Flour Catering located at 205 Church Hill Rd. in Augusta. It will run from 2:00 to 6:00 for any and all who knew him. Bring nothing but a story and a smile.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Plummer Funeral Home at 16 Pleasant St. Augusta, Maine.
