Obituary for Earl L. Knox

AUGUSTA, MAINE
Earl L. Knox - age 81, of Alton Road, died unexpectedly on Feb. 3, 2018 at his residence. He was born in Gardiner, Maine on September 27, 1936, the oldest son of Louis P. Knox and Hilda E. (Lancaster) Knox.
Earl and his wife Patricia eloped in San Diego, CA on October 26, 1956 and celebrated 62 years of marriage that ended just a few weeks ago when Patricia passed away on January 8, 2018.
Earl proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a decorated Vietnam veteran, earning the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and the Presidential Unit Citation from Lyndon B. Johnson.
Earl also proudly served as father to three children: Melissa, Melanie and Michael, raising them at duty stations which included Virginia, Rhode Island, Hawaii, and Minnesota.
He retired as a Captain and came home to Maine in 1972. He served many years on the Legislative Staff for the State of Maine.
Earl enjoyed the game of racket ball - particularly playing and beating younger opponents. He was also known to throw a horseshoe or two. He had a first class sweet tooth.
Surviving are his three children, Melissa A. Hartman and her husband, Jim Ellis of Simsbury, CT, Melanie G. Knox of Belgrade, Michael L. Knox of Belgrade; two brothers, Carl Knox & his wife Laurette of Augusta, ME, and Ronald Knox & his wife Helen of Sarasota, FL; three sisters, Donna Kline & husband David of NC, Leatrice Berry & husband Ray of Bath, ME, and Susan Shores & husband John of Benton, ME, nine grand-children and three great-grandchildren.
There will be no public visiting hours. Committal prayers with military honors will be offered at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 16th in the chapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Rd. Augusta , ME.
Memorial donations made be made to: Cabin in the Woods, a charity benefitting homeless veterans. Send donations to: VOANNE, Huot House Program - Attn: Office, 335 Lincoln St., Saco, ME 04072.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St. Augusta, ME.
