Rev. Raymond Lagacé, OFM
Rev. Raymond R. Lagacé, OFM, age 86, died Saturday, June 30, 2018. He was born in Augusta, ME on July 6, 1931 a son of the late Leon J. and Alida G. (Patenaude) Lagacé.
He was ordained in 1959 by Bishop Damase Laberge, OFM, in Montreal. He celebrated his First Solemn Mass and his Silver Jubilee Mass at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Augusta. June 27, 2018 marked his 59th year as a priest.
His first assignment was as Professor at the former St. Francis College in Biddeford from 1959 to 1975. St. Francis College, now the University of New England, recognized Father Lagacé in 2002 with its Alumni Achievement Award. Father Lagacé also assisted his uncle Father Ronald Paternaude at Holy Family Parish in Sanford from 1970 to 1981. He served as a missionary in Peru and as a translator for Catholic conferences in Africa.
He served as Mission Promoter for the Franciscan Friars in Montreal and later worked for the Missionary Office in Washington, D.C. While still in Montreal, Father Lagacé also collaborated with fellow priests from Belgium and Germany to write a biography of St. Francis. During his 15 years in the Mission Office, Father Lagacé participated in masses at 187 parishes in Canada.
Father Lagacé valued education highly. He held BA in French from Middlebury College in Vermont; MA in French Literature from Middlebury College, Vermont and La Sorbonne, Paris; MA in Missiology/Anthropology from the University of Ottawa; BA in Philosophy from Laval University, Quebec; and a BA in Theology from Montreal University.
In 1998, Father Lagacé accepted employment at the VA Center in Togus where he served as Catholic Chaplain until July 2012, when he retired.
Fr. Lagace’ was a communicant of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Augusta.
Father Lagacé was predeceased by both parents and a brother.
He is survived by his sister, Lorraine and her husband Arthur; sister-in-law, Jeannette; special niece, Roxanne; nephews: Philip, Patrick, Donald, Jr., and Peter; cousins; and special friend Doug.
Relatives and friends may visit from 2-4 PM on Friday, July 6th at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 4 PM. Burial and committal prayers will follow in the family lot in St. Augustine Cemetery, Townsend Rd., Augusta.
