Joseph Leo Plourde - age 77, passed away on June 27, 2018 at Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME after a brief illness. He was born on April 28, 1941 in Eagle Lake, ME the 13th and youngest child of William and Marie Rose (Parent) Plourde.
Following the death of his mother when he was three years old, he was raised by his maternal grandparents, Octave and Anna Parent. His father died when he was 10 years old.
Leo attended Eagle Lake schools and graduated from Fort Kent Community High School in 1959.
Shortly thereafter, he joined the U.S. military, serving honorably in the Air Force from 1961 to 1964 during the Cuban Missile Crises and the Berlin Airlift. His duty stations were in Florida, France and the Netherlands.
On July 14, 1962, he married his wife of 56 years, Dorothy (Lajoie) Plourde at St. Augustine Church in Augusta.
Leo was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Of raising a family, his saying was “you grow up with them”. When his grandchildren came along, the saying was “they may keep you on your toes, but forever young”. He loved his family dearly.
Leo was employed for 25 years at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Togus, ME. Prior to that, he worked for 11 years at the Augusta Mental Health Institute.
Leo was a family man who enjoyed being with family. Holidays and gatherings were happy occasions. He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, cooking, camping, bus tours, gardening and flowers. He loved to keep a nice looking yard. He enjoyed walking and his pets.
Leo was a Life Member of the Calumet Club, a 55+ years member of the Order of Catholic Foresters, Cushnoc Senior Citizens and the AARP. He also did volunteer work at MaineGeneral Medical Center.
Leo was predeceased by his parents, and 11 brothers and sisters.
Surviving is his wife, Dorothy Plourde of Augusta, ME; one son, Daniel Plourd and partner Jonathan Melvin of Portland, ME; two daughters: Jeanne St. Pierre and her husband Lenny of Sidney, ME and Monique Plourde of Waterville, ME; one brother, Richard Plourde and his wife JoAnn of Sidney, ME; three grandchildren: Lauren St. Pierre, Andrew St. Pierre and Zachary Dunton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit on Thursday July 5th from 9-11 AM at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME where a funeral service will follow at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Augusta.
