Burton "Burt" Truman
Burton B. Truman, 83, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at home after an extended illness.
He attended local schools in both Hallowell and Gardiner, graduating from Hallowell High School in 1951.
Burt served his country for more than 20 years in the Navy, then the Army Reserve, and then in the Maine Air National Guard, retiring as a Master Sergeant.
Burt married Patricia O. Nedik on June 18, 1955 at St. Mary’s in Augusta.
He completed the building construction course at SMVTI graduating at the top of his class. Burt worked several years installing kitchen cabinets in many Maine and New Hampshire homes. Looking to further himself, he took a locksmithing course and Burts Security Center was born in 1974 and grew to the large successful business it is today. His final employment before retirement was the Master Carpenter at the Maine State Museum.
Burt was a communicant of St. Michael Parish at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallowell. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for 50+ years, a member of the Maine Wood Turners and a member of American Legion Post 6, Hallowell.
He held active membership in all four country music associations in Maine, serving in many different capacities.
An outstanding highlight for Burt last year was riding in the Old Hallowell Day Parade as the 2017 Hallowell Citizen of the Year. It was a sweet moment.
Burt was pre-deceased by his parents, Sheridan L. “Pete” Truman and Clarice M. (York) Truman, an older brother Roger, and a great-granddaughter Hannah Hoxie.
Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Patricia of Hallowell; three sons: Jef and wife Sophia of Augusta, Brad and wife Rachel of Hallowell, and Andrew and wife Isis of Springfield, Oregon; five daughters: Michelle Truman of Hallowell, Jeannine Emery and husband Mike of Whitefield, Brenda Hoxie and husband Greg of Rhode Island, Melissa Schools and husband Ben of Wakefield, Massachusetts, and Tiffany Thompson and husband Neil of Steep Falls; one sister Joyce (Truman) and her husband Edward Freeman of Whitefield; twenty-three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
Visitation is from 2-4 PM on Sunday, May 6th, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM, Monday, May 7th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 14 Summer Street, Hallowell, followed by a reception at the Sacred Heart Church Hall. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date. Condolences, photos, and memories may be shared at www.plummerfh.com.
