Ben A. Moore, age 69, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2018 at Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME following complications of a lengthy illness. He was born in Augusta, ME on June 25, 1948 the son of the late Albert L. and Polly (Foster) Moore.
Ben was a 1967 graduate of Cony High School, where he was on the ski team. He loved to ski, whether on his beloved Moosehead Lake or snow. He took to it as second nature, and was offered a full college scholarship to be on the ski team. But he had another calling. Ben loved ironworking and sharing his knowledge and technique. In 1989, he earned The American Welding Society Associate Welding Inspector Certification which gave him the opportunity to teach others. He was a tough master, and brought many apprentices along.
He had been employed by Bath Iron Works, Cives Steel and, most recently, Iron Workers Union, Local #7, retiring in the early 90’s. While working for the Union, he worked in Africa, visited Europe, and fulfilled his dream of skiing the Swiss Alps.
Ben was an avid NASCAR fan and had a love for Harleys, street rods and muscle cars. He enjoyed working on race cars at many regional tracks during the 1980’s and early 90’s.
Mr. Moore was pre-deceased by a son, Scott L. Moore.
He is survived by his fiancée, Judy Lizotte of Augusta; two sons: Ben Moore and his wife, Lisa, and Travis Moore; his granddaughter, Heidi L. Moore, all of Augusta; his sister, Lynn Saxton and her partner, John Hoyt of Rumford, his niece Pam Saxton of Seattle, WA as well as several cousins. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Beamer.
At his request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the spring in Wall Cemetery, Riverside Dr., Augusta.
The family would like to thank Dr. Roger Hall and his staff for their dedicated care and compassion for Ben, and the Augusta Fire Department EMT’s for the help they have provided over recent years.
