Linnea Pulis (Gilbert)
Linnea G. "Linn" Pulis, age 79, died peacefully in her sleep at home on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. She was born in Port Chester, New York, on January 18, 1938 to the late Harold A. and Ida I. (Kirkwood) Gilbert.
A graduate of Summit High School in New Jersey, Linn attended college at the University of Maine at Augusta, where she excelled in her classes, especially creative writing, sociology, and anthropology.
Linn had a lifelong intolerance of human and animal suffering of any kind. For many years, she worked tirelessly on animal welfare legislation and myriad other efforts, from volunteering at local animal shelters to rescuing injured wildlife and the bats that regularly blundered into her office. She always said, “If you have a chance to do something kind, just do it.” Countless creatures great and small have benefitted from her endless compassion.
She was employed for over 25 years at the Law Offices of Richard M. Goldman in Augusta. Linn will be deeply missed by Rich Goldman, Sue Ainslie, Melody Doody, Michelle Ramsay, Tracy Towle, and Bria Watson. Over time these colleagues became friends, and then family.
Linn was pre-deceased by her husband, John E. "Jack" Pulis; her son, James "Jim" Turner and her daughter-in-law, Carol Turner.
She is survived by her daughter Karen Pulis and son-in-law Scott Mercier of Ashland, MA, and by her brother, Bruce Gilbert and sister-in-law Ann Gilbert of Middleburg, VA. Bruce and Ann fondly recall the many happy times they all spent together on the beach and boardwalk in Spring Lake, New Jersey. Karen will always remember laughing or crying with her mother at the same moment over a book, film, or line of music. “Somewhere beyond the barricade is there a world we long to see.”
Karen and Sue Ainslie, Linn’s best friend forever, will organize a memorial service in the springtime. A private burial will be held separately at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Dr., Augusta.
Donations honoring Linn's memory can be made to PALS No-Kill Cat Shelter, 188 Case Road Winthrop, ME 04364. Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME.
