Obituary for Susan Katherine Leeman (Mathieson)
Susan M. Leeman - age 94, of Freedom and formally of Hampden, passed away on Thursday October 26, 2017 at Oak Grove Center, Waterville. Susan was born Susan Katherine Mathieson in Montville, ME on August 28, 1923, the fourth child of Donald H. and Jane C. (Edwards) Mathieson.
Susan attended the McFarland Corner School in Montville. She graduated from Walker High School, Liberty, in 1941 and Farmington Normal School in 1943.
Susan married Arthur J. Tibbetts of Liberty. Arthur died in World War II. They had a daughter, Beverlee J. (Lee) Tibbetts. Susan married Guy S. Leeman Jr., of E. Palermo after WW II and they settled in Hampden, Maine in 1948, living there over forty years. There they raised Beverlee and their son Gary S. Leeman.
Sue taught in Liberty and Bingham when young, and in Hampden and Newburgh during the 1950’s and 1960’s. She loved teaching and enjoyed tremendously the many students who were blessed with her presence in the classroom. Sue later worked at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
She was an avid hunter, snow traveler, photographer, gardener, historian, genealogist, grandmother and great-grandmother. In the late 1940’s and 1950’s, Sue and Guy opened their home to three young people who needed a place to live. Probably Sue’s legacy was her generosity and kindheartedness toward her great number of friends and her family members. She was a very supportive person to and a positive influence on everyone around her.
In 1991, Sue and Guy relocated to Freedom where they gardened and enjoyed their great grandchildren. In their declining years they had been lovingly cared for by their daughter, Lee.
Susan is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Guy Leeman, brothers James, Albert and William Mathieson, and two sisters, Mary M. Cooper and Betty Leeman.
She is survived by her daughter Beverlee J. Tibbetts of Jefferson, and son and his wife Gary and Sharon Leeman of Palermo; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Susan is also survived by her brother-in-law, Bruce Leeman of Palermo, sister-in-law Esther Mathieson of Montville, and a large number of nieces and nephews.
There will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial Service will be held at Palermo Christian Church at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Oak Grove Resident Activity Fund, Oak Grove Center, 27 Cool Street, Waterville, Maine 04901. We appreciate the care and consideration given to Sue and our family by the staff at Oak Grove Center.
