Obituary for Peter Alfred Labbe
1953 - 2017
READFIELD - Peter Alfred Labbe passed away unexpectedly at his home in Readfield on Saturday, October 14, 2017.
Born in Augusta on March 24, 1953, Peter was the son of Lionel and Elaine (Nisbet) Labbe. After graduating from Cony High School in 1971, he joined the Armed Services, serving stateside in the military police during the Viet Nam War. He earned a degree in nursing from Boston State University in 1983.
Peter was known for his love of music, deep caring for others, and a contagious sense of humor. He pursued his appreciation for music, first sharing his gift as a solo vocalist in Cony High School Chizzle Wizzle productions. He went on to sing in community theaters and numerous family weddings. Family will always remember how he led joyous sing-alongs at Christmas celebrations, often donned in a red suit, white beard and always with a twinkle in his eye. He dedicated the last three decades of his profession as a mental health specialist, most recently working as a psychiatric care nurse at the Riverview Psychiatric Center in Augusta. All who knew him will long remember his love for making others laugh and the deep bursts of laughter that he would enjoy while telling stories that made others cry with joy.
He thoroughly loved deer hunting and his work as a craftsman. He could make any short walk through the woods into a most interesting story about his excursion and what might be learned from it. He excelled as a carpenter and especially enjoyed making gifts for others using his imagination and his own hands. In August, he and Mary celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at their home known as “The Labbe Farm,” surrounded by those he loved, in the magnificent barn that he built overlooking acres of land filled with gardens, chickens, his dog Bella and Pipi the cat. His best days ended “on the farm” with a cold drink and a warm fire surrounded by family and friends on the homestead he created with Mary.
Family meant everything to Peter and he could not have been have been prouder to be a father and grandfather. Profoundly saddened by the loss of his first born daughter Sarah at the tender age of 12, he delighted in the intelligence, talents and humor that he found in his children and grandchildren. He was happiest when he could spend his time with them.
Family, friends, and the many whose lives he touched in his life and work will miss him dearly. Peter is survived by his beloved wife, Mary (Wood) Labbe, father, Lionel Labbe, daughter Erin Joyce (Kevin), son Sean Putman-Labbe, step daughter Elizabeth St. John (Michael), step son Joseph Graves, and grandchildren Aidan, Collin and Duke Joyce, Jacob Watson, Maximus and Alexander St. John. Surviving siblings include John Labbe (Karen), Susan Hanna (Glenn), Jane Carpenito (Jim), and Joseph Labbe (Jenny Pisculli). Patrice ‘Patti’ Putman, mother of Peter’s children Sarah, Erin and Sean, and, many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends will also miss him.
The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care and the Alzheimers Association, Maine Chapter.
