Obituary for Donald E Nichols
Brigadier General Donald E. Nichols, (Ret.), age 93, peacefully passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2017 with his family by his side. Donald was born on April 14, 1924 in Augusta, ME to the late Leon and Nettie (Benner) Nichols.
He was raised in Hallowell and graduated from Hallowell High School in 1942.
General Nichols served in the US Coast Guard/Merchant Marines from 1942-1945 during WW II. He completed the North Atlantic, European and Pacific Theaters of Operation including his service in the Mediterranean/Mid East War Zone on the SS Harry Lane. He was a decorated veteran who served his country with great pride.
Following WWII, General Nichols completed more than 35 years of service in the Maine Army National Guard, Office of the Adjutant General at Camp Keyes in Augusta. Throughout his career, Donald progressed through the enlisted ranks and retired in 1981 as appointed Brigadier General.
Throughout his life, Donald was very active in the community and volunteered in many capacities at organizations such as Kiwanis Club International, S.C.O.R.E., Goodrich-Caldwell American Legion Post #6 in Hallowell, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge #964, the Seniors Bowling League, The Shriners and he was an active member of the South China Community Church.
Donald was pre-deceased by his first wife of 36 years, Barbara E. (Noble) Nichols; brothers: Robert Nichols, Norman Nichols, Leon (Jim) Nichols and a sister, Gloria Poulin.
Donald is survived by his wife of 28 years, Edwena (Amsden) Nichols of Augusta; daughters: Donnette Harris and her husband Robin of Merritt Island, FL and Stephanie Kadnar and her husband Keith of Belgrade; grandchildren: Jaimee Farrin, Angela Grenier, Avery and her husband Nick Plaisted and Maddison Kadnar; his great-granddaughter, Natalie Grenier; his sisters: Louise Beale of Augusta and Judith Abbot and her husband David of West Gardiner, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Graydon Sharpe, Tim Sharpe and Karen Sharpe and her husband Jeff Dobbs and step grandchildren: Grady Dobbs and Gabrielle Istvan.
A private committal service will be held in the Chapel at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta on Wednesday, August 2nd at 11 AM. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, Augusta 2nd at noon at the Goodrich-Caldwell American Legion Post #6 on Second St. in Hallowell. A committal service will be held at 3 PM at the Litchfield Plains Cemetery in Litchfield following the celebration in Hallowell.
