Obituary for Robert G. "Bob" Crockett

Robert G. "Bob" Crockett
Robert G. Crockett - age 79, a longtime resident of Smith St., died peacefully on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at Maine Veterans Home, surrounded by his loving family, including his wife and sweetheart of more than 58 years, Patsy. Bob endured his extended illness with grace, dignity, and the quick wit he was famous for. He was born in Augusta, ME on April 27, 1937 the son of Charles A. Crockett and Doris (Hallowell) Crockett and was a graduate of Lincoln Elementary and Cony High School.
On December 27, 1958, Bob and Patsy’s Christmas gift was each other, and they began a wonderful journey. ln 1960, Jon joined the family and in 1961 Jim joined the family, and together they enjoyed many adventures and experiences, including great camping trips cross Maine, New Hampshire, and Canada. Bob and Patsy were the boys’ biggest fans and were always involved in the boys’ activities, enjoying having friends over to hang out at their pool, or water skiing behind their bright red boat. The family suffered a great loss when Jon was killed in a tragic car accident in 1978, along with five of his friends, but Bob, Patsy, and Jim continued to live and prosper, as Jon would have expected.
Later in retirement, Bob and Patsy enjoyed their trips to Nevada for Vegas shows, and side trips to see the sights. Bob’s life will be defined by the love of his family, his friends, his Country, and his community. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force, delivered the mail to his friends and neighbors for 37 years, and always with a smile. The quality of his service was recognized with the Postal Pal and Safe Driving Awards from The US Postal Service.
But Bob’s military and Postal service were just a small part of his dedication to the community. Bob believed in public service and never shied from an opportunity to serve, often in a leadership role. He served for 14 years on the Augusta City Council, he was a former Postmaster and Sergeant at Arms for the Maine State Senate, and worked tirelessly for the Democratic Party, receiving the Rodney Quinn Award from Maine State Democratic Party. He was elected and served as the Kennebec County Treasurer.
Bob’s dedication to his community was nothing less than remarkable, but what will be remembered is the professionalism and humility he displayed. Bob was a long-time supporter of youth athletics, serving as President of the Augusta South Little Leagues and was Past President of the Cony High School Boys Ice Hockey Boosters Program. He was a former Member of the Old Fort Western Board of Trustees, a lifetime Member of the Kennebec Historical Society, and a longtime member of Green Street United Methodist Church of Augusta.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by a son, Jon R. Crockett, and a brother, Richard W. Crockett.
Bob is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patsy A. (Garside) Crockett of Augusta; a son, James G. Crockett of East Winthrop; a sister, Ruth Eastman of Augusta; a brother, Charles Crockett of Cape Cod, MA; and his three grandchildren: Jessica, Sarah & Christopher, whom “Pa” adored and gave him great pride. Bob also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, great friends and his feline friend “Eli”. Bob had a special gift of making everyone feel like they were his special someone. Bob will be missed by all of these special friends, especially Betty and Sherwood Glidden, whom he and Patsy shared many vacations and trips to the theater.
At Bob’s request there will be no public visiting hours. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM on Friday March 17th at Green Street United Methodist Church, 13 Green Street, Augusta. Spring burial will be in Wall Cemetery, Augusta.
Memorial donations are preferred to: Jon R. Crockett Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Cony High School, 60 Pierce Dr., Augusta, Maine, 04330.
